Navigators are your guide for the first year experience! They represent FYE at various marketing functions, host weekly walk-in hours for students, and support the office with communication efforts and monthly events. Navigators  use their college experience to help navigate you through the first year!

What is a Navigator?

Navigators are current students on campus who want to help students in their first year at UA navigate campus life and the transition to college. These students are available to answer questions, provide connections to campus resources, and serve as a peer mentor.

How do I become a Navigator?

Be the Navigator of the first year experience by serving as an ambassador for the First Year Experience and Retention Initiatives office! Navigators will represent FYERI at various marketing functions, host weekly walk-in hours for first-year students, and support the office with communication efforts and monthly events. Use your college experience to help navigate incoming student through their first year!

Expectations and Position Responsibilities

  • Navigators should be willing to share their experience and be passionate about supporting new students.
  • Navigators need to have completed at least one semester at UA.
  • Navigators must be enrolled at UA for the 2019-2020 academic year.
  • Navigators will host 5 office hours per week at a set schedule as walk-in Transition Talk times for a student to visit the office without an appointment.
  • Navigators will support and attend a minimum of 3 FYERI associated events per semester such as Welcome Home Block Party, Get On Board Day, Class Presentations, Monthly Seminar Series, and other promotional opportunities.
  • Navigators will host Welcome Week Information Stations in the first week for fall and spring classes.
  • Navigators will attend a monthly team meeting for professional development, discussion of experiences, and support brainstorming of new initiatives for the office.
  • Navigators will remain in constant communication with the office of First Year Experience and Retention Initiatives.

Timeline and Commitment

Application Opens: April 1
Application Due: April 15
Interviews: April 18 – 23
Notification of Selection: April 24
Mandatory Team Welcome Event: April 26 at 4 p.m.
Mandatory Team Training: August 20 from 2 – 5 p.m.
Monthly Meetings: 2nd Friday of each month from 3 – 5 p.m. (Subject to change based on availability)
Weekly Office Hours: 5 hours per week on a set schedule for fall 2019 and spring 2020
